Open-channel flow, a branch of hydraulics and fluid mechanics, is a type of liquid flow within a conduit with a free surface, known as a channel. The other type of flow within a conduit is pipe two types of flow are similar in many ways but differ in one important respect: the free surface. This test method covers measurement of the volumetric flow rate of water in open channels with two types of horizontal broad-crested weirs: those having a square (sharp) upstream corner and those having a well-rounded upstream corner.

The use of “area-velocity” methods, such as that provided by the Doppler ultrasonic MACE FloPro XCi to measure flow in open channels, not only negates the need for costly civil structures, but also increases the overall accuracy of the measurement. Furthermore, with a MACE FloPro, it is possible to measure flow in open channelsFile Size: KB. Comparison of Open Channel Flow & Pipe Flow 1) OCF must have a free surface 2) A free surface is subject to atmospheric pressure 3) The driving force is mainly the component of gravity along the flow direction. 4) HGL is coincident with the free surface. 5) Flow area is .

Abstract. Thus far this book has been concerned with meters for measuring total flow and flowrate in pipes. We come now to instruments of a related but essentially different type, namely instruments for measuring the velocity at a point of a flowing : Alan T. J. Hayward. Figure A uniform open-channel flow: the depth and the velocity profile is the same at all sections along the flow. 12 One kind of problem that is associated with uniform flow is what the channel slope will be if discharge Q, water depth d, and bed sediment size D are specified or imposed upon the flow.

Open channel flowmeters perform flow measurement of liquids that are open to the atmosphere at some point in the flow measurement path. The liquid may be entirely open to the atmosphere, or may be contained within a closed pipe that is not full of liquid and only open to the atmosphere at the installation point of the flowmeter itself.

It covers methods of employing current-meters or floats to measure the velocities. It should be noted that although, ISOLiquid flow measurement in open channels. Flow measurements under ice conditions [11] ISO/TRMeasurement of liquid flow in open channels.

Open-channel flow measurement. Open channel flow describes cases where flowing liquid has a top surface open to the air; the cross-section of the flow is only determined by the shape of the channel on the lower side, and is variable depending on the depth of liquid in the channel.

various devices and direct methods like weirs, flumes, dilution. used for flow measurement in open channels are : Arun Goel. Direct measurement method Timed volume or volumetric streamflow method.

This method is used for streams where the entire flow converges into a single descend (Hauer and Lamberti ; Shope et al. ).The time required to fill a container of a known volume is recorded and later used to calculate the average flow rate (Lawson ).For reliable and accurate results, container must be of Cited by: 8.

Standard metergates, w eirs and flumes are common devices installed in open channels and irrigation ditches to measure water flow. Each has advantages and disadvantages and understanding these can hel p you decide which one to choose.

The choice of which device to use will depend on channel size, range of flow rates and flow gradient. TecQuipment’s Flow Measurement apparatus shows the typical methods of measuring the flow of an essentially incompressible fluid (water).

It also shows applications of Bernoulli’s equation. Students measure flow using a Venturi meter, an orifice plate meter. the flow depth (yielding values for both T and A).

Critical flow in open channels can be created by three means: 1. Raising the bottom of the channel; 2. Lowering the bottom of the channel; 3.
